It's been another wonderful week in second grade! On Tuesday, we packed boxes to send to soldiers overseas. A former soldier from the US Army spoke to the children to help them understand how much the care packages mean to the soldiers who receive them.
On Wednesday, Meteorologist Steve Stewart from ABC11 visited all the 2nd graders. He was a huge hit! On Thursday, students chose a historical figure and began researching using multiple sources of information. Stay tuned for their final research writing projects! Jessie was Star of the Week. Her mom visited last Friday as our mystery reader and shared lots of cool things from her job as a veterinarian. Here are a few pictures from our week: What a fun week! We've had a fabulous time dressing up this week for Spirit Week. My personal favorite was our "Pirate Day" which included an exciting treasure hunt that ended in Captain Tinnesz's office.
In math, we've been learning about place value and built towers with base 10 blocks. We also learned about adding and subtracting with regrouping. In science, we learned about the water cycle. We split into groups and chose to teach the rest of the class about the water cycle in different ways. A couple of groups made models with legos, some drew diagrams, some used the green screen, and others wrote a song. They all did a fantastic job! We were also lucky to have the author and illustrator of a children's book visit on Friday. The illustrator even taught us how to draw a peacock! What a fun and exciting week we've had! The "Children of the World" have done a wonderful job prepping for the pageant and look FANTASTIC in their costumes.
In math this week, we completed the "Peppermint Challenge". Students were given index cards, spaghetti noodles, marshmallows, gumdrops, toothpicks, and peppermints. They had to build a tall and sturdy tower, capable of supporting 3 peppermints stacked on top of each other. It was a great, fun challenge! The team winning team's tower measured over 15 inches tall! Check out some pictures below. Merry Christmas! See everyone back in 2017! It has been another fantastic week in 2nd grade! We've been lucky to have access to Chromebooks this week. In Social Studies, we used them to research Christmas around the world and create informative posters. In math, we reviewed how to log on to IXL and practice math skills.
We've also been busy practicing for the Christmas Pageant. We hope you're ready for a wonderful service! Gideon was our STAR last week! Jessie and William are featured on the Twitter board in the 1st/2nd grade hallway! One more week until Christmas break! Our class was discussing the history of Thanksgiving one day last week. We started talking about what we are thankful for when the students began thinking about others who may not have as much. We decided that collecting food for those in need this Thanksgiving would be a great way to help out.
Here's a picture of just a little bit of the food that students brought in. Everything will be delivered to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC by the 2nd grade teachers before Thanksgiving. Thank you for all your support! Happy Thanksgiving! Between Election Day and Veterans Day, we've had quite a week! Jessie's grandfather visited our class for lunch and answered lots of our questions. Chetan was our STAR this week and shared his special talent, Taekwondo! Our mystery reader was Carter's grandfather. He read a book about plant life cycles and brought a really fun activity. We have also finally finished all of our animal project presentations. They were amazing!
We spent some time this week learning about prefixes and suffixes, standard and nonstandard measurement in the learning garden, inferring while reading, and addition and subtraction strategies. Here are just a few pictures from our week: Today we learned all about voting, the current election, and democracy. We used our knowledge to vote in order choose between two books to read together as a class. Along with the other second grade classes, we each filled out a secret ballot The votes were counted and a majority chose Turk and Runt: A Thanksgiving Comedy by Lisa Wheeler. We look forward to reading it soon! Check out our Election Day pictures below:
We've had quite a busy and exciting week! The animal projects are off of dining room tables and taking over the entire back of our classroom. They look amazing! I'm looking forward to hearing all of the children present what they have learned for the class.
We spent the week practicing for the Pumpkin Parade, picking radishes from the learning garden, making inferences in reading, and continuing to work on writing narratives. In math, we're still learning about measurement and "skip-jumping" on a open number line to solve addition equations. Check out some pictures from our week! |
