This week has been one for the books! On Monday, we visited Prairie Ridge Ecostation where we had a chance to explore pond life and learn about the life cycles of all different kinds of creatures.
In reading, we have continued to study characters. We can now differentiate character traits from character feelings, provide evidence from the text to support our thinking, and understand how and why characters change throughout a story. In writing, we are learning that writing is a PROCESS and that good writing takes a lot of time and effort. Everyone is now either in the final editing stage or the publishing stage of their personal narrative writing. I'm so proud of how much their writing has improved from their first drafts! In math, we have been learning about place value and are building the foundation that we will need to work with bigger numbers in the future. We are also learning about measurement, specifically with regard to length and perimeter. AJ was our "Star of the Week" this week and taught us tons of cool facts about beekeeping. Mrs. Tinnesz was our mystery reader and brought a special surprise guest! Thanks for all your do! Check out a few of the pictures from our busy week below.

We just don't know how to stop learning in second grade! Take a look at just a few of the awesome things we've been doing this week!We have loved any chance we've had to use iPads to learn in the classroom. Our class has been learning about classifying animals beginning by sorting animals into the broad groups of vertebrates and invertebrates. This week, we dove a little deeper into our research and studied different types of amphibians. Each student used "PebbleGo" to research either newts, salamanders, frogs, toads, or mudpuppies. Then, students worked in small groups to create a poster with information to later use to teach the rest of the class. We're still finishing up our presentations but I was so impressed with how hard they worked, how well they worked together, and how excited they were to teach the other students in our class. Check out the pictures of our research process and our finished posters!
We've had a great week but today was especially fun! We learned about reading with a partner during our reading centers. Students are supposed to take turns reading pages of the book. If someone gets stuck on a tricky word, their partner says, "coach or time?" If the student picks "coach" it means that their partner can help them figure out the word. If they choose "time" it means that they want a little more time to work through it on their own.
In math, we made "Beetle Glyphs" and sorted and analyzed our class data. We also had a "Math Problem Solving" session this afternoon in which we used the new 2nd Grade iPads to manipulate base 10 blocks. These 2nd graders know how to use technology! Check out our pictures below. It's hard to believe we are well into our second full week of school! This week in reading, we are continuing to learn about comprehension strategies. Your child should be able to tell you what it means to "STOP and check for understanding." Be sure to ask them about it when you're reading with them at home.
Today, we learned about story elements and practiced retelling stories we've read. We walked along the "Yellow Brick Road" which guided us in our retelling. We'll use the road to help us retell stories all week! We had a FABULOUS first day of second grade! We went to chapel, learned about routines and procedures in the classroom, played with old and new friends at recess, and discussed ways we can "fill buckets." Ask your 2nd grader what it means to fill a bucket or what it feels like have a full or empty bucket :). We're looking forward to a great rest of the week!
